One summer, in a northern coastal town, a man encounters a pair of siblings living in a poor ghetto. The sister worked as a prostitute to support their .nances, and the brother was recently released from prison. The man was intensely drawn in by their pure hearts. The depiction of their meeting and the .rst appearance of the heroin, scenes which burn a lasting impression in the mind, draw the reader into the story right from the start.
Sato vividly depicts the youthful dreams and bitter reality of young people living at the lowest depths of society.
