Risa Wataya was awarded the Akutagawa Prize in 2004 at age 19 (she won together with Hitomi Kanehara’ s “Snakes and Earrings”).

Among Akutagawa Prize winning novels, Keritai Senaka became the first million seller in 28 years, since Ryu Murakami’ s “Almost Transparent Blue” won the award in 1976.
Wataya realistically portrays an adolescent girl and the discomfort she feels towards the “world”, and her delicate prose and story line supported by her expertly honed use of the five senses has won her great praise.

The story begins with an eye-catching opening line that won high praise from various sources. The main character, Hatsu, is in her first year of high school. While having trouble fitting in with her classmates, she meets “Ninagawa”, an isolated boy in her class who is heavily obsessed with pop idols. He is a huge fan of a certain fashion model, but he has no interest in the actual girls around him. Gradually, Hatsu develops an impulse towards Ninagawa, not love or infatuation, but one that can best be described as “a desire to dropkick him”.
